10 Steps to Creating a Scavenger Hunt!

All the following can be done using a template, available by clicking on the Teacher S H Template Link on the navigation bar.

  1. What do you want your students to learn?

  2. Decide on the curricular focus of your Internet Scavenger Hunt.

  3. Find a collection of relevant web sites on the topic. To do this, you’ll first need to learn to search the Internet effectively. Click on the Effective Searching link on the navigation bar to see some IMPERATIVE searching information.

  4. Open up a word processing program for writing the instructions and questions.

  5. Begin with very clear and specific directions for each and every step the students should take when they get on the computer. i.e. open up your web browser, click on this button, etc.

  6. Give the students a list of questions with hyperlinked sites for exploration. Be sure to gather the material from a variety of different web sites and from various positions on the pages.

  7. Make the assessment rubric available. Need some help? Click on the Assessment & Rubrics link on the navigation bar.

  8. Make the scavenger hunt accessible to your learners (either by placing your word processing document on the computers or via the net) Need some advise? Click on the Accessibility link on the navigation bar.

  9. Plan to pair together a student who has advanced web browsing skills with a more inexperienced student so that students can learn from each other.

  10. During the hunt, plan to monitor the students closely, offering tips about how to effectively find information on the Internet.
