Where Did it Go? Moving From OS 9 to OS X Tiger
Appearance Control Panel
There is no longer a control panel called Appearance but some of its features are still around.
• Themes Tab Gone.
• Appearance Tab Go to System Preferences >Appearance Pane.
• Fonts Tab Gone, you can no longer change the system fonts used by OS X.
• Desktop Pictures Go to System Preferences >Desktop & Screen Savers Pane.
• Highlight colors Go to System Preferences >Appearance Pane.
• Size of icons Go to View >Show View Options.
• Sound Tab Go to System Preferences > Sound Pane.
• Options Go to System Preferences >Appearance Panel.Apple DVD Player
• Called DVD Player and it is in the Applications folder.Apple Extras
• AppleScript Now called Automator and it is located in the Applications folder.
• Digital Color Meter Located in the Applications >Utilities folder.Apple Menu
This menu is no longer customizable.
- About this Computer
- To find out about your Macs system, which software version, total installed memory, and processor type choose Apple >About this Mac.
- For memory stats on running programs, go to Applications >Utilities >open Activity Monitor.
- Apple System Profiler
- Go to Applications >Utilities>System Profiler, or from the About This Mac window>More Info...
- Calculator
- Go to Applications folder.
- Chooser
- Choosing a printer now requires you to go to Applications >Utilities>Printer Setup Utility, or from Print and Fax System Pane.
- Connecting to a Network requires you to go to Go Menu >Connect to Server.
- Control Panels
- Replaced by System Preferences. Click on the Dock icon or go to Apple >System Preferences.
- Favorites
- Favorites are now shortcuts in the sidebar or in the Dock.
- Key Caps
- Go to System Preferences>International Pane>Input Menu>select Keyboard Viewer.
- Network Browser
- Eliminated Go to the Go Menu >Connect to Server, or click on Network in any Finder window.
- Recent Applications, Recent Documents, Recent Servers
- There are two different places to find your recently opened files. To open recent applications, utilities, and or documents, use the Apple menu. To open recent folders and or servers, use the Go menu.
- ScrapBook
- Eliminated closest thing to this now is Stickies which will accept graphics, sounds, and movies.
- Sherlock
- Launch this by clicking on Sherlock in the Dock. You can also find Sherlock in the Applications folder. Sherlock is now an Internet search application only. To find files, Choose File >Find or press Command+F. As a local search tool, Sherlock has been replaced by Spotlight, located in the upper right corner.
- Stickies
- Located in the Applications folder. They have more features, including the ability to add graphics, check spelling, search all your notes, print one or all your notes, and more.
AppleCD Audio Player

• Networking controls are in System Preferences >Network.Application Menu
• Replaced by the Dock.
