OS X SELF-PACED TRAINING MANUAL
Updated for Version 10.4

Welcome to the DoTS training site for OS X (pronounced "ten"). There are many new features in OS X with which all users should be familiar. The core of the operating system is based on a version of Unix. Why is that important? It is important for the following reasons:

  • Stability - OS X rarely if ever crashes. If applications should crash they won't necessarily take down other applications or the entire system.
  • Memory management - OS X takes care of assigning memory so you don't have to change the memory allocations of applications to make them work.
  • Multi-user environment - OS X is designed for more than one user on a computer. This means there can be multiple accounts with different access on the same computer. It also can be used as a single-user computer, too.

The purpose of this self-paced training manual is to help you become familiar with Apple's new operating system: OS X. There are several sections of material. Each section includes an overview and links to the other sections. At the end, there is an assessment for you to gauge your need for further training. To get started, click on the link for Chapter 1 in the Table of Contents list on the left side of this page. To review the training site for OS X 10.3 Panther or OS X 10.2 Jaguar, look for the links at the bottom of the Table of Contents.
