Webcams

Technology now links the world together—in every way, from a global perspective to a personal connection.  And DPS classrooms can harvest this wonderful resource!  Web Cams aren’t just for nosy neighbors telecommuting around the global village.  A wealth of sites packed with educational, travel, and research value are out there waiting for you to discover them.

Linking the viewer and the viewee is done via a small, inexpensive devise known as a WebCam, a small video camera connected to a Web server and automated software that refreshes the image at a fixed rate, anywhere from every few seconds to every several hours.  Within moments, desktop tourists can be whisked from a fish’s view of an Atlantic Ocean reef to a taxi ride high in the Colorado Rockies, or the icebound bottom of the world.

Check out some of these sites and feel free to keep them on your computer screen (especially if your classroom computer is hooked up to your TV).  As hard as it is to explain the concept of population density, it is as easier for students to understand once they see the streets of Singapore.

Web cams take you directly to faraway places or fascinating species, bringing authentic global visuals to students of all ages.  Don’t hesitate to run a search on your favorite search engine if you are looking for something specific.

Virtual Field Trips and Tours

Taking the students on a field trip can be expensive, time-consuming…and sometimes impossible, if you want to visit somewhere that is more than 100 miles away.  Well, let the Internet bring the world to YOU!
