ENERGY and
Conservation

(Grades 3 - 4)

Students will begin this 4 week unit by exploring where energy comes from and how electricity is created, learning about the economic and environmental impacts of each power source through a virtual tour of a power plant, interactive websites, articles and books.  The second week students will examine their personal energy habits and needs at home and school through surveys and discussions.  Students will discover and discuss the energy their families and schools use (and possibly waste), and begin brainstorming ideas for how we can change our habits to save energy.  During week three, students will conduct practical experiments to find out what we can do as consumers to conserve energy in our homes and schools.  Specifically, students will learn about weatherization, insulation, heat absorption, water usage, and energy efficiency.  The unit ends with a culminating project where students will apply their knowledge to the creation of an energy efficient home or a conservation advertisement
