Activity List
The following is a table of activities designed to provide teachers with a comprehensive, standards-aligned, interdisciplinary, technology-integrated curriculum for teaching the genre of tall tales. Feel free to add your own elements, delete activities, or modify the unit to work best for you and your students.
Intended Learning
Through the genre study of tall tales, students comprehend the intention of tall tales and then write and produce a video based tall tale newscast assimilating all learned information.
Unit Activities
- Elements and variety of tall tales - View and discuss the “Mighty Tall Tales” PowerPoint presentation.
- Background of a Tall Tale - Understand the elements of a tall tale, Search out and read a variety of tall tales beyond the provided text.
- Compare & Contrast 2 Tall Tales - Use the Venn diagram in activity 2 to compare and contrast two of the same tall tales as written by different authors.
- U.S. location of Tall Tales - Map all the locations/settings of tall tales read.
- Visual Product Tools - Create a newscast introduction poster incorporating multiple elements such as key words and phrases as well as eye-catching artwork.
- Late Breaking News Story - Author and produce a newscast about a tall tale as partners or individually.
- Presentation of Tall Tale - Create a “My Favorite Tall Tales” PowerPoint presentation
- Persuasive presentation - Write letters to tall tale main characters.
- Letter Writing Skills - Create a final portfolio or multi-media presentation that includes all finished products form the unit demonstrating the knowledge acquired on the subject of tall tales.
- Final Product - Using the rubric provided on the “Classroom Resources Needed” page, students and teacher will evaluate the final products as the closing activity.
