The following is a table of activities designed to provide you with a comprehensive, Standards-Aligned, Interdisciplinary, Technology-driven curriculum for Race Around the World.  Feel free to add your own elements, delete activities, or modify the unit to work best for you and your students. 

Intended Learning

Imagine taking your students on the field trip of a lifetime!  How about a field trip Around the World??  And just to make it really exciting, let’s RACE!  Framed in an intra-class competition, students explore interdisciplinary content (writing, math, science, research, and technology) to delve into and analyze authentic global issues.

Objectives

  1. To familiarize the students with a regional understanding of world geography, science, or upper elementary curriculum as they prepare maps and trace their strategies routes;
  2. To develop and refine authentic writing skills;
  3. To increase research skills, using library resources, maps, almanacs and the Internet.
  4. To provide motivation, as they are awarded prizes at the end of the activity for (1) most miles traveled; (2) fewest days traveled; and (3) most money earned.
